Campus focuses on global warming as part of national effort

sand mandalaThe Colgate community on Thursday took part in a nationwide discussion about global warming.

Nearly 20 discussions, workshops, and film screenings were held as part of Focus the Nation, a teach-in focused on finding solutions to global warming and to raising the issue's political profile.

The campuswide effort, organized by a team of 30 students and faculty members, resulted in a jam-packed schedule of events that adds to the university's exploration of environmental issues.

Live from Colgate: Talk radio with some twists

The radio show must go on.

And so it did for Arnie Arnesen, a political analyst and longtime radio and TV show host who visited Colgate Tuesday to talk to students about the presidential primaries.

Arnesen has been on talk radio for nearly 20 years, and each weekday hosts the Chowder in the Morning program, which is available online and on AM radio and public access TV stations throughout southern New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts.

A last-minute scramble to get on the air landed Arnesen and her husband, Marty, in office space in McGregory Hall early Tuesday morning.

A team of 30 students working with Robert Turner, professor of economics and environmental studies, organized campus events as part of Focus the Nation, a national teach-in centered on finding solutions to global warming

Students discuss key issues facing Europe at conference

Colgate students taking part in the Model European Union (EuroSim) conference in Germany had the chance to tackle pressing issues such as independence for Kosovo and the image of the European Union.

The international conference was held the first week of January at the European Academy in Otzenhausen, Germany.

Assistant professor of political science Mai'a Cross led the Colgate delegation, which was composed of three sophomores (including me) and three seniors.

Search engine expertise fuels story about alumni

Searching for an interesting example of what Colgate alumni do with their degrees?

Search no further: a story that appeared this week in The Miami Herald offers an interesting look at Steve Clark, Class of '96.

Clark graduated with a philosophy degree, but instead of heavy-duty soul searching, he turned his attention to Internet searching and is now a "search engine guru," according to the story.

Colgate degree is a very valuable asset, alumni tell seniors

A Colgate University degree can connect you to a world of people.

That seemed to be the message at this weekend's Real World program, developed to prepare Colgate seniors for life outside of Hamilton.

About 150 alumni took time out of their busy schedules, returning to campus to speak with hundreds of seniors for Real World, which has been in existence for more than a decade.

Yee-Ann Cho '90 manages a $200 million portfolio for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the world's largest philanthropic foundation with $60 billion in resources.

Digital training opens doors to newsrooms, says alumna

Deirdre Childress '81 has a message for all journalists, young and old: Know your multimedia.

The Weekend magazine editor of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Childress was recently elected secretary of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). One of her platform prongs focused on job retention for journalists of color, something she said can be improved by teaching them to be web savvy.

"The digital generation is so far ahead of the current [working] generation, so one of the areas we need to work on is to give mid-career journalists more digital training," she said. "Journalists of color are hitting a ceiling. People are living a long time and they won't be competitive in their careers if they're not qualified to move up."

Acclaimed ensemble to help Colgate celebrate MLK Day

The uplifting and educational music of the Grammy Award-winning group Sweet Honey in the Rock will cap off a series of events at Colgate University honoring the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

The campuswide activities will feature readings of King's speeches, music, discussions, presentations, and faculty and student-led workshops on civil rights topics.

The theme of this year's Martin Luther King Jr. commemoration: arts and activism.

Bob Woodruff '83 receives prestigious award from NCAA

Bob Woodruff '83, a member of Colgate University's Athletic Hall of Honor and standout lacrosse player before his career in journalism, was among seven former NCAA student-athletes to receive the prestigious 2008 NCAA Silver Anniversary Award.

The award recognizes former student-athletes who have completed successful collegiate careers in various sports and have excelled in their chosen professions.

Online buzz about custom coffee offered at the Barge Canal Coffee Co. - Colgate University's downtown coffeehouse -- has stoked sales of the roasted blend.

Java-lovers from around the nation have been taking advantage of a collaborative effort between the Barge and Colgate Bookstore that has resulted in easy online ordering.

The buzz about the brew began in late November, when Peter King, a senior writer for Sports Illustrated, wrote about the delicious Colgate University Blend in his popular "Monday Morning Quarterback" column that appears on SI.com.

Colgate 13 establishes Griffith memorial fund

The Colgate 13 has been singing the praises of Dean William Griffith '33 for decades. With his passing on November 19 at the age of 95, Colgate 13 alumni -- or "Crusties," as they are called -- wanted to do more. They decided to express their love for "Griff" and his mentorship with an endowed memorial scholarship that could benefit future members of the a cappella group.
