Tickets go fast for Dalai Lama's lecture

The remaining tickets for the much-anticipated lecture by the Dalai Lama at Colgate University were snatched up by the general public in just three hours Saturday.

The free tickets were available via the Colgate Bookstore's website starting at 12:01 a.m. Saturday.

By 1 a.m., only 50 tickets from a pool of a little more than a thousand were left. And just before 3 a.m., those burning the midnight oil at the bookstore watched the last ticket be snapped up.

This came as no surprise to staffers who've been fielding calls from across the country since word of the Dalai Lama's visit was released in February.

"Everyone wants tickets to the lecture. In fact, we had alumni calling from as far away as California. This is a huge event not only for the university, but also the entire region," said Linda Gregory, of the bookstore.

A few weeks ago, students, staff, and faculty members got first dibs on tickets. The lecture will be held at Sanford Fieldhouse, which can accommodate 4,900.

"The Colgate community is so revved up about the visit," said Julia Gooding '08, president of Colgate's Buddhist Student Association.

Gooding, who's visited the Dalai Lama's monastery in Dharamsala, India, believes he has a pertinent message for everyone.

"His Holiness speaks about peace and compassion -- messages that resonate with a lot of people and are very meaningful in our world today. Regardless of your religion, he'll deliver a very powerful message."

Gooding helped organized a number of public events to educate the campus and community about Tibetan Buddhism, including an interactive workshop at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12, in Lawrence Hall's Ho Lecture Room.

She said there's a heightened interest in the Dalai Lama because of the current situation overseas. Following recent violence in Tibet's capital and a volatile Tibetan region of western China, the Dalai Lama has called for a peaceful resolution.

The Dalai Lama will speak at Colgate as part of the Global Leaders Lecture Series, sponsored by Colgate's Parents' and Grandparents' Fund.

Robert H. N. Ho '56, who has a longstanding relationship with the Dalai Lama, was instrumental in getting him to visit Colgate.

In September 2006, Ho arranged for President Rebecca Chopp to meet with the Dalai Lama in Vancouver. Ho provided a helpful overview about Colgate to the Dalai Lama, who expressed an interest in visiting. Chopp issued the official invitation, and the university received word in January about the visit.

For those unable to attend the event, a webcast of the lecture will be available by clicking here. A live video feed of the lecture will also be broadcast on campus channel 20.

About 4,900 tickets are reserved for the lecture, making it a capacity crowd. Students, staff, and faculty got first dibs on tickets. There were a little more than 1,000 left for the general public -- all of them have been reserved.

Does anyone know how many tickets were sold between students, staff and general public? I have one ticket, as for some reason, my second ticket doesn't exist, and I don't think I'd like to go alone if there will be 3,000+ people or any rediculous number of people.

I am hoping to find a pair of tickets for the event, if there are any available, please email me at treat@mac.com

Thank you!

Caroline,

As we prepare for the visit, we are in constant contact with the Dalai Lama's representatives.
They assure us that the visit to Colgate will not be impacted by the current unrest.

Hi.
I was just curious as to whether or not this event will take place as scheduled. Obviously, recent events concerning the Dalai Lama, Tibet, and the Olympic games have caused a great deal of uproar. Because of this, and many other factors, I have been doubting that this trip will even take place. I'd love to know what is going on and if the Dalai Lama will indeed be speaking.
Thank ypu.

I waited and looked everyday for tickets to be available and then they were gone before I could get a chance to even order some. That was very sad news as I told my husband who is a practicing buddhist I would get him tickets to go as soon as they were available that was his dream to see him...even if I had to pay for them. If anyone has 2 tickets available and willing to part with them please contact me 315-368-4948 or kpenner65@msn.com. Thank you...Kim

Crossing fingers now...

I'm just so impressed at the quality and diversity of speakers and ideas flowing through Colgate these days. To bring George Will last week and have the Dalai Lama coming in a few weeks, not to mention conversations about film and health care, I hope that students and community members are able to take part in the thriving intellectual community. Kudos for bringing voice to ideas across the spectrum of issues and ideologies.

I'm coming to see the Dalai Lama speak at Colgate. Is there anyone else from the NYC area that's going? I'm looking for a ride, and I was planning on heading up to Colgate early Monday, and return to the NYC area directly after his speech on Tuesday.
