Lacrosse teams give Raiders fans day to remember

That slimmest of margins was the difference in two thrilling victories Saturday for the Colgate men's and women's lacrosse teams.

Both teams are headed to the NCAA Tournament, but first they get a chance to revel in their home victories that fueled the passions of Raider Nation and established several "firsts" for the programs.

The men's team beat the No. 2 squad in the nation -- Syracuse -- by a score of 12-11 at Andy Kerr Stadium. The Raiders held off a furious rally by the Orange to secure the win in front of 4,572 fans.

Syracuse is the highest ranked opponent the Raiders have beaten in program history, and the win marks the first time since 1963-64 the Raiders have beaten the Orange in consecutive seasons.

Colgate, ranked No. 12 in the nation, will play No. 6 Notre Dame in South Bend in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The game is at noon Sunday, and will be televised by ESPNU.

Senior Matt Lalli scored a career-high seven points from three goals and four assists to lead the Raiders on senior day. Sophomore goaltender Tim Harrington (Lutherville, Md.) added the other spectacular performance with 16 saves, including the stop in the final second of action to secure the win.

The women's team ensured its trip to the NCAA Tournament by holding on for a 19-18 victory over Marist at Tyler's Field. It's the third time in five years the team will go to the tournament, but it was the first time in program history the team secured an invitation by winning an NCAA play-in game.

carroll_molly18ER_WEB.jpgColgate will visit Penn, which is ranked No. 1 in both national lacrosse polls this week, on Sunday for its NCAA first-round game.

Molly Carroll once again proved her value to the Raiders as she led her team with five goals against Marist. Sophomore Meghan Lawler added four goals and an assist, while freshman Colleen Bubnack posted three goals and two assists.

Both the men's and women's teams had won their Patriot League Tournaments, giving them big boosts as they headed into Saturday's play.

As an SU grad, lacrosse player AND Rich Bartlett's younger brother, I just want to add these words to the blog: QUIT BEATIN' MY SYRACUSE LACROSSE TEAMS ALREADY! I mean, ok, I can accept maybe last year's defeat, SU didn't have a particularly good team, but to do it again this year? COME ON! You're killin' me! I'm hoping SU uses that defeat as a wake up call... It's called a silver lining, I guess.

Both Heather and Jim have done an unreal job! Congratulations!

Upon informing fellow Hartford, CT area resident, Stew Lindsay (Lacrosse Hall of Fame and Syracuse lacrosse teammate of Jim Brown of NFL Cleveland Browns fame) of 'gate's win over the Orange he said, obviously stunned, "...and two years in a row!" 'nuf said!

As a '72 player vs SU, on a beautiful spring day in Hamilton when we lost by only two goals, I was proud of that "moral victory". However, I'm even MORE proud of this year's tremendous tangible victory.

Keep it going guys! Jump on 'em early in the quarters! Make 'em think "more of the same!"

P.S. "Hi" to teammate Brian Rooney!!

Congratulations to Coaches Bliss and Nagle and all the players of the Colgate lacrosse program! Colgate lacrosse has sure come a long way since the "club" program of the 70's. Your hard work has made a big difference, and is a joy for us old stickers to watch. Hope you have a lot of fun in the NCAA Tournament!
We'll be watching and cheering!

As a member of the team back in 1963-64, I shed a few tears of joy learning of the teams "follow through" victory over Syracuse yesterday after winning the Patriot League. It takes character to keep a good thing going. Congratulations and best wishes to all in the NCAA Tournament. What a great thing to wish for. Sandy Conde

Coaches Heather Bliss and Jim Nagle have done well indeed! You have developed your teams throughout the season with the skills, athleticism and drive to be the best in the Patriot League and beyond. While the results speak for themselves we can only imagine how satisfying all of this is for your captains and their teammates, not to mention Colgate parents, faculty, staff, students and fans in town. This is college sports at its best.

Best of luck in the NCAA Division 1 tournament.

Warm regards, Steve Solomon '76
