Senior class gift to launch environmental fund

| Comments (1)

The Class of 2008's "green" gift to the university was the subject of an article in The Post-Standard.(Syracuse)

The class has raised about $23,000 to launch a fund that will help the college reduce energy use. About 94 percent of the senior class has made donations.

The Environmental Sustainability Fund will be used for, among other things, summer internships, guest speakers, and improvements to forests owned by Colgate.

Colgate's board of trustees will contribute $23,000 to the fund, which will be overseen by a committee that will include a member of the senior class. (Click here for more Colgate in the News items.)

Those seniors who have finalized plans for after graduation are taking part in an interactive map that shows where they will be and what they will be doing after leaving Colgate.

A Google application was modified for the online map, which continues to grow as more seniors finalize plans and which will soon feature video profiles of eight members of the graduating class.

It is great to see Colgate students caring about the environment. I am in Kenya working with the children, but also, we are designing programs to combat global warming. We are conserving wildlife, forests and even people in the rural parts of East Africa. I hope some Colgate students will come visit us in Kenya and you can get a hands on feeling of how to change the environment. We intent to plant millions of trees and in the process, create a wealth generation program for local farmers who make less than $1 per day. This is a great opportunity if you want to make a difference to our environment.
