Alumnus calls from middle of Atlantic to offer update

| Comments (4)

"It's a bit like being in a washing machine," Paul Ridley '05 said about sleeping on Liv, the 19-foot rowboat that he is sailing across the Atlantic Ocean in an effort to raise $500,000 for cancer research.

rss-podcast.pngRidley talks about his expedition in the latest episode of Colgate Conversations, the podcast series that highlights members of the campus community.

The interview was recorded when Ridley called via satellite phone on day 49 of the row, which was the halfway point of his 2,950-mile journey from the Canary Islands to Antigua.

The 25-year-old is poised to be the youngest American to row across any ocean solo and unsupported, with no chase boat as a means of re-supply. If successful, he will be only the third American to successfully row across the Atlantic.

In addition to a satellite phone, he has solar-powered navigation, communication, and survival equipment. The boat has just enough room for him to sleep in the aft cabin and store supplies in the fore cabin.

Ridley and his sister, Joy, founded the public charity Row for Hope after losing their mother to cancer in 2001. To make a donation or to follow Ridley's progress, visit his website.

What an amazing adventure! I've climbed some mountain for charity but I couldn't imagine braving the Atlantic in a row boat. Ridley, you've got something that most people don't and that that a lot of heart. Good luck!!

And I thought I was hardy. Last weekend, I participated in the 6th Annual Relay For Life NordicStyle at the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, VT. 250 participants skiied and snowshoed through the night to honor loved ones lost to cancer, celebrate survivors and support those still fighting. Over 3,000 Relays are held each year across the country, but ours is the only one held in the winter on snow. We raised $75,000 to help the research and programs of the American Cancer Society. Paul's monumental effort makes me look like a wimp! I wish him well.

Hi Bob,

We added a more direct reference to donations with a link to the website. Thanks for your suggestion, and I'm sure Paul thanks you for your contribution.

Hello Colgate,
Thanks for the info on Paul Ridley '05 on his solo trip across the Atlantic. I've made a donation to Paul's cause in the fight against cancer. I was hoping Colgate might be able to put in one or two stronger sentences on how people can donate to Row For Hope and their fight against cancer. I'm sure any info that you could put out to help another "Colgate Family/ Paul '05" member would be appreciated. Just a suggestion - Thanks. Take care, be safe, go'gate!! bob glendening ' 71
