Saperstein renovation more than a sum of its parts

In many religions, food is love. Now, thanks to generous contributions from Mike Saperstein '62 and Charles Axelrod '63, Colgate's Michael Saperstein Jewish Center has two brand new hearts: two spacious kitchens where meat and dairy foods can be prepared separately, so traditional kosher meals can be shared.

$1.6M in grants to enhance research, programs

Colgate was recently awarded seven highly competitive grants totaling more than $1.6 million from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), allowing the university to enhance faculty-student research opportunities as well as expand on-campus summer programs for K-12 teachers and college instructors.

An NSF grant will fund associate professor of psychology Kevin Carlsmith's research into the underlying principles that guide attitudes about aggressive interrogation.

Powell meets with students, delivers public lecture

Ret. Gen. Colin Powell -- former U.S. secretary of state and one-time leader of 350,000 troops -- knows how to make an entrance."Sit down, you're making me nervous," barked the general in the good-natured tone perfected over five decades of Army leadership, politics, and diplomacy. Having stared down world leaders and stood up to the four American presidents he served, Powell could hardly have been intimidated by the 50 students who rose in unison as he entered Golden Auditorium Friday.

Blackmore Media Center focus of Chronicle story

Colgate's Blackmore Media Center, the new state-of-the-art home of student-run radio station WRCU (90.1), garnered attention in this week's issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education.

In a full-page story, The Chronicle's Brock Read takes readers down memory lane, reminiscing about a distant era in college radio, thanks to the fond recollections of his father Don Read '66, a former WRCU news director and station manager.

Colgate celebrates 60 years of Jewish Life

L'dor Vador, from generation to generation. That was the message in New York City on November 6, 2008, when nearly 200 alumni, parents, and friends gathered to celebrate the vibrancy and importance of Jewish studies and Jewish life at Colgate. With Jewish studies faculty on hand, along with some of Colgate's most outstanding Jewish students and young alumni, the feeling of pride was palpable.

Alumni in journalism discuss presidential election

Instead of flipping through the television channels to find the latest take on the presidential campaign, more than 400 people packed into New York City's Axa Equitable Center Monday night to hear election analysis firsthand from a panel featuring Colgate alumni in the journalism field.
Newsweek chief political correspondent and senior editor Howard Fineman '70, who has interviewed every major presidential candidate since 1984, told the audience of alumni and friends that "this has been an election of a lifetime to cover."

The following is a message from President Rebecca Chopp to the Colgate community:

As I meet and speak with Colgate students, faculty and staff, it is clear that the recent credit crisis and its impact on the financial markets and economies around the globe is a topic of concern to us all.

I am heartened by how many of you have asked me how our endowment is faring, how our alumni are doing in this situation, and how you can help.

Buzz you hear is about WRCU's new high-tech home

Programming on Colgate's student-run radio station is now being beamed from a new studio that has dramatically increased the station's visibility and created new opportunities for student deejays.
The dreamy digital digs for WRCU (90.1) is in the new Blackmore Media Center, in the lower level of the O'Connor Campus Center (Coop)."We have gone from extremely little visibility to being in the center of campus," station general manage Paul Osmolskis said about this summer's move from cramped quarters in Drake Hall to the Coop.

Institute experience inspires alumnus to tackle brain drain

If ever there were a poster child for upstate New York, Kevin McAvey '05 would be it.Like so many of his Colgate friends, McAvey left the area after graduation, but, he says, his "heart stayed in the upstate New York region.""There's still not a day I don't cross that border into upstate that I don't break into a smile," said McAvey, a downstate native. Now, three years later, he's followed his heart, moving back from Washington, D.C., to attend graduate school at Cornell University.

Colgate convenes political brain trust

Former presidential candidate Walter Mondale said, "Modern politics today requires a mastery of television."

On April 8, while the rest of America was flipping channels in search of the latest 2008 presidential campaign news, a capacity crowd of more than 200 alumni and friends gathered at the Paley Center for Media in New York City to gain election insights first-hand from a panel of Colgate's modern political experts.

Colgate 13 establishes Griffith memorial fund

The Colgate 13 has been singing the praises of Dean William Griffith '33 for decades. With his passing on November 19 at the age of 95, Colgate 13 alumni -- or "Crusties," as they are called -- wanted to do more. They decided to express their love for "Griff" and his mentorship with an endowed memorial scholarship that could benefit future members of the a cappella group.

Alumni and friends had the chance to do just that at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C., during one of Colgate's campaign celebrations.
