Now, thanks to generous contributions from Mike Saperstein '62 and Charles Axelrod '63, Colgate's Michael Saperstein Jewish Center has two brand new hearts: two spacious kitchens where meat and dairy foods can be prepared separately, so traditional kosher meals can be shared.

$1.6M in grants to enhance research, programs
Colgate was recently awarded seven highly competitive grants totaling more than $1.6 million from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), allowing the university to enhance faculty-student research opportunities as well as expand on-campus summer programs for K-12 teachers and college instructors.
An NSF grant will fund associate professor of psychology Kevin Carlsmith's research into the underlying principles that guide attitudes about aggressive interrogation.

Former prime minister Tony Blair to speak at Colgate
Tony Blair, former prime minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, will visit Colgate University in October for the next edition of the university's Global Leaders Lecture Series.
Blair is scheduled to give a public talk at 7:15 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, in Sanford Field House. Ticket information will be released in August.

Powell meets with students, delivers public lecture
Ret. Gen. Colin Powell -- former U.S. secretary of state and one-time leader of 350,000 troops -- knows how to make an entrance.

Having stared down world leaders and stood up to the four American presidents he served, Powell could hardly have been intimidated by the 50 students who rose in unison as he entered Golden Auditorium Friday.

Blackmore Media Center focus of Chronicle story
Colgate's Blackmore Media Center, the new state-of-the-art home of student-run radio station WRCU (90.1), garnered attention in this week's issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education.
In a full-page story, The Chronicle's Brock Read takes readers down memory lane, reminiscing about a distant era in college radio, thanks to the fond recollections of his father Don Read '66, a former WRCU news director and station manager.

Tickets for Powell lecture now available to public
(Editor's note: As of Wednesday, March 25, all tickets to the lecture have been reserved.)
Tickets for former Secretary of State Colin Powell's lecture, "Leadership: Taking Charge," at Colgate are now available to the public.
As part of the university's Global Leaders Lecture Series, Powell will give a talk at 8 p.m. Friday, April 3. in Sanford Field House. There is no charge for a ticket, which is required to attend the event.
The public can reserve general admission tickets (limit four per order) by going to the Colgate Bookstore website or calling 877-362-7666 while supplies last.

New website documents Russian communal apartment life
It was one of the most enduring social experiments of the Communist era: since the revolution of 1917, Russian families from various backgrounds have lived together in urban communal apartments. Colgate professors Alice Nakhimovsky and Nancy Ries, with colleagues from around the world, have created an online museum to systematically document this unique lifestyle through pictures, video clips, articles, and artifacts.
