Study Abroad Fair offers look at global options

The Hall of Presidents swarmed with students Wednesday night during the second annual Study Abroad Fair.

More than 18 Colgate off-campus study programs were represented, as well as non-Colgate programs.

The fair is intended to help the 62 percent of students who go abroad before they graduate, the majority with Colgate programs, according to Barbara Gorka, director of international programs.

Fellowship fanned alumna's interest in global issues

Alumna Chi Chi Obichere-Roxo's interest in international development - sparked by a Colgate extended study course and a Watson fellowship - can be seen through her work involving refugees in Kenya, religious leaders in Nigeria, and a host of others around the world.

Obichere-Roxo '00 is a program officer with Management Sciences for Health, a nonprofit global health organization based at The Extending Service Delivery Project, a consortium of six international organizations funded by the United States Agency for International Development.

Besides Kenya and Nigeria, Obichere-Roxo also has worked in England, India, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Mali. She focuses mainly on reproductive health and family planning issues.

Dalai Lama offers words of wisdom about happiness

042208dalailamaCommentsICON.jpgNearly 5,000 people streamed into Hamilton, across Colgate's campus, and into Sanford Fieldhouse to hear His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama speak about happiness -- that illusive quality that all human beings want, yet find so hard to achieve.

Before beginning, he removed his shoes and arranged himself slowly in a cross-legged position in the oversized crimson leather chair that was made for the occasion.

Dalai Lama lecture tickets available starting Thursday

Tickets for the Dalai Lama's lecture at Colgate University will be made available starting Thursday (March 20).

As part of the university's Global Leaders Lecture Series, sponsored by Colgate's Parents' and Grandparents' Fund, the Dalai Lama will give a talk at Sanford Fieldhouse from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 22.

Thanks to the generosity of Colgate's parents and grandparents, all tickets will now be complimentary.

Dalai Lama to visit Colgate as part of lecture series

(Editor's note: The Dalai Lama's visit has been rescheduled to Tuesday, April 22.)

The Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, will visit Colgate University in April as part of the Global Leaders Lecture Series.

On Thursday, April 24, the Dalai Lama is scheduled to give a public talk at Colgate. More details about the lecture, including ticket information, will be released in the near future.

Campus focuses on global warming as part of national effort

sand mandalaThe Colgate community on Thursday took part in a nationwide discussion about global warming.

Nearly 20 discussions, workshops, and film screenings were held as part of Focus the Nation, a teach-in focused on finding solutions to global warming and to raising the issue's political profile.

The campuswide effort, organized by a team of 30 students and faculty members, resulted in a jam-packed schedule of events that adds to the university's exploration of environmental issues.
