Students share findings from summer research

As the rhythm of a new academic year takes hold, students who worked with faculty members this past summer were able to pause and share their research findings with peers and professors.

The third annual Ho Symposium on Student Summer Research held last month allowed nine students from each of the departments and programs housed in the Ho Science Center to share key research findings.

13 performers help Barge celebrate 13th birthday

video iconIn true Colgate fashion, the Barge Canal Coffee Co. celebrated its 13th birthday with 13 hours of music and 13 performers on Saturday.

When the celebration started at 10 a.m. at the university-run coffeehouse in downtown Hamilton, Colgate students, faculty both past and present, and families from the area started to fill the place that many call the "living room of the community."

Diversity Week aims to spur dialogue, build community

diversity.gifWith the theme of "Race and Culture in the 21st Century," Colgate University Diversity Week, Sept. 15-19, will feature intellectual discussions, lectures, and cultural activities on campus as well as in the village of Hamilton, where a community festival will cap off the series of events.

"The goal of the inaugural Diversity Week is to recognize diversity initiatives on campus and create additional dialogue aimed at building a more inclusive community at Colgate and beyond," said Keenan Grenell, vice president and dean of diversity.

Hamopoly: First-years explore village of Hamilton

video iconColgate first-years strolled down Oak Drive last Thursday to explore the village of Hamilton as part of the first-ever Hamopoly event, a unique twist on the Monopoly board game.

Hamopoly, sponsored by Colgate's Office of Residence Life and the Hamilton Business Alliance, is intended to introduce first-years to the community they'll call home for the next four years.

Slater brothers sponsor film festival in Hamilton

A little piece of Hollywood is coming to downtown Hamilton this summer thanks to the efforts of Grant Slater '91 and his two brothers, Wade and Todd. They are the sons of the late Colgate men's hockey coach Terry Slater, and founders of Slater Brothers Entertainment (SBE).

SBE will hold its first-ever Hamilton Film Festival and Awareness Walk from Aug. 7-8.

New position to bolster Colgate's community ties

Joanne Race Borfitz of Norwich, N.Y., will join Colgate University as associate vice president of community relations and auxiliary services starting April 7.

Borfitz fills a new position created to manage Colgate's relationship with and investments in local and regional communities. She will also oversee the primary auxiliary operations of the university.

"Joanne is a proven collaborator with great appreciation for what makes Hamilton and central New York so special," said David Hale, vice president for finance and administration at Colgate. "She will hit the ground running as she helps us all ensure that Colgate continues to play a meaningful and appropriate role in the community."

Picker after-school art club engages local children

Instead of rushing home when the last school bell of the day rings, budding Hamilton area artists are heading to the Picker Art Gallery at Colgate University.

On Monday afternoons, the Picker is transformed into a classroom as inquisitive 6-to 10- year olds let their imaginations run wild while attending the gallery's after-school art club.
