William Skelton, 86, launched music, India initiatives

William Skelton, who took generations of Colgate students on the India Study Group that he created and who founded the Colgate Concert Orchestra, passed away Sept. 23.

Skelton, Robert Ho Professor of Asian studies and professor of music emeritus, joined the Colgate faculty in 1954 as a music professor. He directed the chamber band, 65-voice glee club, chapel choir, and marching band.

Alumna to perform complex role in 'Frida' opera

Manzielloweb.jpgGina Manziello '02 (right), who studied theater, voice, and psychology at Colgate before earning a master's in acting at USC, is starring this weekend in Frida, an opera about the life of the iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

The production at the Carrier Theater in Syracuse, N.Y., opens the 38th season of the Society for New Music.

Alumna, MTV executive discusses network's evolution

MTV has been a major influence on pop culture for more than 25 years, and Carole Robinson '83 has been there for nearly its entire lifetime, having joined the cable TV network just three years after its founding in 1981.

rss-podcast.pngIn the latest episode of Colgate Conversations, the podcast series that highlights members of the campus community, Robinson talks about the network's evolution and her current role as executive vice president and chief of staff.

Legions of naysayers had greeted the all-music network when it launched Aug. 1, 1981, with a music video by The Buggles called "Video Killed the Radio Star."

Chamber Singers' performance recorded for TV show

Solo performanceThe Colgate University Chamber Singers embraced an opportunity to move from concert stage to recording studio for a performance of holiday pieces that will be televised in areas of New York and northern Pennsylvania.

Director James Niblock and the 12 student performers were asked to appear on Expressions: Holiday Harmonies, a program produced by WSKG, a Public Broadcasting Service affiliate in Vestal, N.Y.

The Chamber Singers and the Ithaca Children's Choir each appear for 30 minutes of the hourlong program that will air 8 p.m. today (Dec. 4) and 2 p.m. Dec. 25.

Buzz you hear is about WRCU's new high-tech home

Programming on Colgate's student-run radio station is now being beamed from a new studio that has dramatically increased the station's visibility and created new opportunities for student deejays.

The dreamy digital digs for WRCU (90.1) is in the new Blackmore Media Center, in the lower level of the O'Connor Campus Center (Coop).

"We have gone from extremely little visibility to being in the center of campus," station general manage Paul Osmolskis said about this summer's move from cramped quarters in Drake Hall to the Coop.
