Message to the Colgate Community from Jill Harsin

By Contributing Writer on September 21, 2015

Dear Colgate students, faculty, and staff:

This is a time of great sorrow for Colgate, and our hearts go out to the families and friends of Ryan Adams ’19 and Cathryn (Carey) Depuy ’19.

We are a community; and as a community we gain consolation and strength from our bonds. We should take the opportunity today, and in the days that follow, to be kind to each other; to ask for help if we need it, and give help to others; and to give thanks for the precious and fragile gift of life.

We will gather as a community tonight on the quad, in front of the chapel, for a candlelight vigil at 7:30 p.m. We will stand together as part of the greater Colgate community, both on and off campus, across distance and across generations, a community of which Ryan and Carey will always be a part.

The counseling center (315-228-7385) is open and available to Colgate students. As always, counseling is available to members of the faculty and staff through the Employee Assistance Program (315-451 2161).

In light of this tragedy, some of this week’s campus events will be postponed or cancelled. Please consult the campus calendar for updates. Memorial services will be scheduled at a later date in consultation with the Adams and Depuy families.

Interim President

Sharing tragic news

By Contributing Writer on September 20, 2015

Dear members of the campus community:

It is with deep sadness that I share the tragic news that two students, Cathryn (Carey) Depuy ’19 and Ryan Adams ’19, both of Ridgefield, Conn., died this afternoon in a plane crash in Morrisville, N.Y. after taking off from Hamilton Municipal Airport. We have been in contact with both students’ families. No further details are available at this time.

For Colgate students affected by this difficult news, counseling center and chaplain’s office staff members (315-228-7385) will be available in Judd Chapel on the lower level of Memorial Chapel this evening. Tomorrow, the counseling center (315-228-7385) will be open and available to Colgate students. As always, counseling is available to members of the faculty and staff through the Employee Assistance Program (315-451-2161).

In light of this tragedy, some of Monday’s campus events will be postponed or cancelled. Please consult the campus calendar for updates.

A community vigil will be held at Colgate Memorial Chapel at 7:30 p.m. Monday evening.

Sincerely,

Suzy M. Nelson
Vice President and Dean of the College

Dining Services Update

By Contributing Writer on September 16, 2015

To the campus community,

During the spring semester of 2015 a student, faculty, and staff committee, aided by a consulting firm, conducted an extensive search process to select a dining service partner that would provide the best possible food service to the campus community. Chartwells was selected after a rigorous, competitive search, and in mid-July they assumed responsibility for the university’s dining services. Since that time, they have worked diligently towards a smooth transition. We acknowledge that the beginning of the semester brought many challenges, and that our high expectations have not been met.

The Chartwells team is working to fix the problems. Below is a partial list of the changes that have been made or will be made over the next several days. These changes were made based on feedback received from students, faculty, and staff.

The Coop

  • As promised a la carte items are now available
  • A grab-and-go cooler filled with salads, sandwiches, sushi, fruit, yogurt parfaits, and Greek yogurt has been added
  • Pre-made and made-to-order breakfast sandwiches, as well as full breakfast meals, are available
  • Additional items have been added to the salad bar as requested
    All-natural smoothies are now available
  • Chicken tenders and “Quesadilla Wednesdays” are back
  • Daily specials utilizing a 21-day menu rotation started this week
  • A sandwich bar featuring a daily hot special and two cold specials is now available

Frank

  • On September 21, a hand-tossed salad station will open, allowing students to select their own fresh ingredients and have staff create their salad
  • A second cash register has been added to help reduce waiting times
  • A Tandoori oven has been installed to introduce Indian cuisine
  • A rotisserie oven will be added over break, allowing all meats to be roasted on site
  • The 24/7 option has created a new social space for students to enjoy
  • Starbucks is serving hot and cold specialty drinks around the clock

Hieber Café

  • Additional food items will be introduced, including hot soups, Chobani yogurt, and additional varieties of sushi
  • Hours have been expanded: Monday – Thursday 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 a.m.; Friday 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.; Saturday11:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.; Sunday 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 a.m.

Catering

  • A new catering chef has been hired and new policies put into place to ensure a high-quality catering experience

In the coming weeks student focus groups and surveys will be done to continue to monitor satisfaction levels and to gather additional input. Chartwells wants your feedback, so please reach out to them. Their contact information is available below. I would also ask that you continue to provide your input to Joanne Borfitz , Associate Vice President for Community Affairs and Auxiliary Services, (jborfitz@colgate.edu, ext. 7120) or to me directly (bhutzley@colgate.edu, ext. 7766).

The Colgate community deserves an excellent on-campus dining service and we are committed to ensuring that this happens. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are sorry for any inconveniences encountered in these first weeks.

Sexual climate initiatives

By Contributing Writer on September 14, 2015

Dear members of the Colgate Community,

We are determined to end sexual violence at Colgate, and we ask all students, staff, and faculty to join us in this commitment.

Those who experience sexual assault have access to confidential and anonymous reporting systems, caring support, and assistance from trained Equity Grievance Panel (EGP) members and counseling center staff. The shaw wellness institute will appoint an EGP advocate/educator who will also serve as a confidential resource for all members of our community.

This year, all new students completed AlcoholEdu and Haven, an online sexual assault prevention program. As in past years, the Bystander Intervention program will be offered to all first-year students. All new students and their families received letters, reinforcing our commitment to ending sexual assault and noting the link between high-risk drinking and unwanted sexual contact and assault. As a reminder, Colgate has medical amnesty and good samaritan policies, and students are expected to help students at risk.

The Sexual Climate Advisory Committee (SCAC) continues to coordinate all efforts related to improving Colgate’s sexual climate. During the 2014–2015 academic year, there were 84 positive sexuality and EGP-related programs with a total of 6,274 participants. We will continue to reinforce signature programs such as Yes Means Yes, Bystander Intervention training (attended by nearly 1,000 students last year), and This is not a play about sex (seen by 32 percent of campus last fall).

We want to thank the countless community members who have championed these efforts. Best wishes for a happy and safe 2015–2016 academic year.

Sincerely,

Jill Harsin
Interim President
