Campus Advisory – Drones

By Contributing Writer on December 23, 2015

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recently announced a new regulation (faa.gov/uas/registration) requiring the registration of all unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), including those known as “drones.” The regulation requires individuals to register their drones by February 19, 2016. People who do not do so could face civil and criminal penalties.

Colgate is currently engaged in reviewing existing guidelines for the use of drones on campus, and a working group is being established to consider a policy to address the use of drones on Colgate property.

Until a clear policy can be developed and shared with the university community, all drones are now prohibited from flying on, from, or over Colgate property until further notice.

Sincerely,

Campus Advisory – Deer Culling Begins December 23

By Contributing Writer on December 22, 2015

To the campus community:

As the Village of Hamilton moves forward with its initiative to reduce the local deer population in concert with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Colgate has designated two carefully chosen areas of the Seven Oaks Golf Course to serve among the dozen cull sites within the village limits.

This initiative was developed and informed in part by academic, faculty-led research conducted under the auspices of Colgate’s Upstate Institute.

Archers at the Seven Oaks sites will be university cull participants who have volunteered their time and have undergone the same background checks and training as other cull participants.

The overall effort commences on Dec. 23, 2015. As a precaution, members of the campus community are advised to refrain from walking on the golf course until further notice. The community will be informed when the culling initiative is completed.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Week Events

By Contributing Writer on December 16, 2015

Dear Members of the Colgate Community:

Colgate’s annual observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. week will coincide with the start of the spring semester (January 18th-22nd). Thomas Cruz-Soto, Associate Dean of Campus Life, and the MLK Planning Committee have arranged a very compelling week of activities, involving our own students, faculty, and staff, as well as distinguished outside visitors. Faculty may wish to consider these events as they plan spring semester course syllabi. For a detailed list of events for the week, please view the attached document and our webpage. In the new year, you can use the Colgate mobile app and tap the MLK Week (I have a Dream) Icon to see information about the events.

Sincerely,

Constance Harsh
Interim Dean of the Faculty and Provost

Suzy Nelson
Vice President and Dean of the College
