Why I give back to Colgate by Kathleen Dill ’89

Acquaintances often ask me why I volunteer for Colgate. As many times as I’ve been asked this question it always strikes me as strange. Then I remember that those acquaintances did not attend Colgate.

Like many of you, I arrived at Colgate with a few expectations about what my four years would bring. In some cases those expectation were met and, in some cases, they were not. What I didn’t expect — and couldn’t have known — is that the school that I thought “just wasn’t right for me” and “was just like my high school” would end up giving me so much more than a bachelor of arts degree. I did learn a lot in the classes I attended (course credits? check!), but I also discovered a deep passion for fine art; first visited the city that I still love today, 26 years later; met the very best friends a person can have; and was taught never to be satisfied with delivering something that was good if I could deliver something that was great. I also learned that I had an obligation to give back. No one told me that I had to give money, time, internships, or advice, but it was clear that I should give back in whatever ways would be meaningful for me and helpful to the students. These are amazing lessons that I may have learned if I were to have matriculated elsewhere. But the fact is, I learned them at Colgate.

So in responding to that question about why I volunteer for Colgate, I explain that just as so many others gave back so that I would have a great Colgate experience, it seems obvious that I would do the same. As the grateful recipient of financial aid, a former rugger, proud sister of Delta Kappa Upsilon, and a black alumna, I give.

I wanted to let all of you — students and alumni alike —know why I give back to Colgate and why I am encouraging you to do the same. Whether or not you had a great experience in Hamilton; whether or not your dorm still exists (R.I.P. KED); and whether or not your club, sorority, fraternity, or sports team lives on; you will always be a part of the great tradition that is Colgate. In fact, this university would not be the amazing place it is today if you hadn’t driven down 12B and become part of the Colgate story.

With your involvement, Colgate will have the support it needs to continue fulfilling its ambitions to strive, improve, and evolve. There is so much that Colgate does well — just check out Facebook, Gateline, Twitter, and the Colgate website — and there is much, much more that we can, and absolutely must, do better — not 5 or 50 years from now, but today. So please contribute to helping students at this small university, in this small town, make the biggest impact in this great world.

Kathleen Dill ’89 is a trustee and alumni council member. On Leap Day (February 29, 2016) she has challenged recent alumni (2006–2015) to make a gift to Colgate. All recent alumni who do so by midnight will be invited to participate on a call with Kathleen and fellow alumni council member, Tim Seamans ’02 later this month about the benefits of engagement with Colgate. Safety Advisory: February 25, 2016

By Contributing Writer on February 25, 2016

On February 25, 2016, at approximately 2:00 a.m., two female Colgate students walking back to campus on Broad Street from downtown were followed by an unknown male onto the Willow Path.

According to one of the students, the male was yelling something at them. About halfway down the Willow Path, the other student decided to confront the male and an altercation ensued.

As a result of the altercation, that student was injured and the male ran off. The students continued to a residence hall, where they notified Campus Safety of the incident. Campus Safety responded and transported the injured student to the hospital, where she was treated and released.

The suspect was described as a male, approximately 40 years of age, and spoke with a heavy accent, possibly Southeast Asian. There was no further description. Campus safety officers checked the campus and village areas for the male and were unsuccessful in locating someone matching that description.

Anyone with information pertaining to this incident is encouraged to contact Campus Safety at 315-228-7333. Information may also be provided through the Campus Safety Department’s web page by utilizing the Tip Form.

Campus Safety patrols are continuing to make frequent checks of campus and the surrounding area for the suspect.

For personal safety, members of the campus community are reminded to travel in pairs or larger groups and immediately report any suspicious activity to Campus Safety. Blue Light phones may also be used for reporting incidents.

Campus Safety monitors the crime reports it receives from the campus community and local police agencies and issues alerts or safety advisories to the campus community on any incidents that are considered to be a serious or continuing threat to students and employees.

Fire/Life Safety Inspection

By Contributing Writer on February 22, 2016

The Village of Hamilton Codes Office will be conducting annual required fire / life safety inspections of all university buildings from February 29th thru March 31st. In preparation for this regulatory requirement, the Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) requests that all university community members review their respective spaces for fire / life safety code compliance. Common violations from past inspections include the following:

  • Blocked egress / exits
  • Sprinkler head / sprinkler pipe obstructions
  • Use of extension cords without an installed protection device / circuit breaker
  • Fire doors propped open
  • Use of candles
  • Covered smoke detectors
  • Improper storage of flammables (ex. propane tanks)

Please contact the Colgate University Fire Safety Manager (Gary Bridge) at ext 6531 if you have any questions regarding the upcoming inspection and/or require assistance conducting a pre-inspection fire safety walk thru of your spaces or correcting a fire code citation. Your cooperation during these important fire / life safety inspections is greatly appreciated.

Very Respectfully,

Gary Bridge

Announcing the Konosioni Senior Honor Society Class of 2017

By Contributing Writer on February 5, 2016

In 1934, two secret societies, the Skull and Scroll and the Gorgon’s Head, resolved to end their rivalry and joined together forming the Konosioni Senior Honor Society. Colgate students chose the name “Konosioni,” which literally means “people of the longhouse,” to honor the living traditions of the Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) Confederacy. The Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) Confederacy was created when the Oneida, Mohawk, Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, and Tuscarora nations joined together in a league of “peace and power” and resolved to stop fighting. Today, the Konosioni Senior Honor Society stands as a peer-selected group of 26 members, representing 13 from each original society, and recognizing outstanding leadership, dedicated service to the community and the preservation of tradition.
