How many times have you heard, ‘you can’t make money working in the common good/non-profit sector? Well, guess what, the non-profit sector is comprised of organizations that do not distribute its surplus funds to owners or shareholders, but instead, uses them to pursue its goals by reinvesting in the organization. This actually sounds pretty neat and forward thinking if you ask me. Sign me up!
The non-profit and common good sector is actually an exciting and passionate field to pursue. This industry allows individuals to combine their transferable skills with their passions, causes of support, and personal interests into a long lasting career. Did you know that there are over 1.4 million different non-profit organizations registered with the IRS and they are continuing to grow! You may be thinking, that’s great, but how can I start getting involved while at Colgate? First of all, start “doing well by doing good” right here at Colgate with these few tips:
- Start volunteering some time here and there with local organizations or charities (Check out a list here
- Involved in Colgate’s Greek Life? Collaborate with an organization and/or put together a cause or event to help one of your interests. (Example: Check out RAINN–America’s largest anti-sexual violence organization. For more information on how you can get involved check out RAINN Day!)
- Check out The COVE (Center for Outreach, Volunteerism, and Education) and the ALANA Cultural Center here at Colgate.
- Network and attend the Doing Well by Doing Good Luncheon Series offered by The COVE and Career Services (Held at least four times every semester).
- Partake in The Finding Money for Social Change Grant Writing Class offered each spring (Heads up: applications are usually due early January).
Furthermore, while you are a student at Colgate University, take advantage of your Career Service Center located in Spear House. Sit down with an advisor and discuss some of your thoughts, concerns, passions, interests, or just to get an idea of what is out there for you! Below are some fellowships/summer opportunities you may want to consider:
- Summer Funding Opportunities (Due date: March 6. Tip: start early!)
