The Economics Department awarded the following three students from the Class of 2014 with awards:

Marshall-Keynes Award for Excellence in Economics:  Hoang Minh Tue Nguyen
Awarded by the department to the senior with the strongest, sustained performance in analytical economics.

Chi-Ming Hou Award for Excellence in International Economics: Annie Hines
Established by past and present department members in honor of the late Chi-Ming Hou, who was a member of the Colgate economics department from 1956 to 1991, for outstanding achievement in International economics.

J. Melbourne Shortliffe Prizes: Conor Coughlin
Established in honor of the late J. Melbourne Shortliffe, chair of the economics department emeritus, and awarded to outstanding graduating seniors who have concentrated in economics.

The London Economics Study Group recently traveled to Glasgow, Scotland and visited a historic Scottish warship and the world’s first classroom for children and shared pictures of Professor Tom Michl at the locations they visited.

Several of our faculty have  had papers accepted for publication recently:

Professor Michael O’Hara has four recent publications appear in print. “Pulling Econometrics Students Up by Their Bootstraps” just appeared in the  Journal of Economic Education 45(2): 121-130. “Empirical identification of perceived congestion” recently appeared in Empirical Economics 45(3): 1167 – 1187, 2013.  Also, “Nonparametric Generalized Least Squares in Applied Regression Analysis” (with C. Parmeter) was published in Pacific Economic Review 18(4): 456 – 474, 2013. “Do Actions Speak As Loud As Words? Commitments to “Going Green” on Campus” (with P. Sirianni) was recently published in Contemporary Economic Policy 32(2): 503-519 (2014).

Professor Bob Turner has a new published article:  “Valuation of Cultural and Natural Resources in North Cascades National Park: Results From a Tournament-Style Contingent Choice Survey” which recently appeared in SAGE Open 2014:4: 1–9. The paper is co-authored with Colgate alum Blake Willmarth. Professor Turner also published: “Using Contingent Choice Surveys to Inform National Park Management,” Journal of Environmental Studies and Sciences (February 2013).

Matt Jaremski, Assistant Professor, has written “Sales and Firm Entry: The Case of Wal-Mart” (co-authored with PJ Glandon), which is forthcoming in the Southern Economic Journal.  His paper entitled “National Banking’s Role in U.S. Industrialization, 1850-1900,” is forthcoming in the Journal of Economic History.

Professors Takao Kato and Chad Sparber recently published a paper in the Review of Economics and Statistics: “Quotas and Quality: The Effect of H-1B Visa Restrictions on the Pool of Prospective Undergraduate Students from Abroad,” 95 (1): 109-126, March 2013.

Professors Nicole Simpson and Chad Sparber have a paper that recently appeared in the Southern Economic Journal: “The Short- and Long-Run Determinants of Unskilled Immigration into U.S. States.” 80(2): 414-438, October 2013.

Zijun Luo, Visiting Assistant Professor, has a recent paper forthcoming in the Journal of Population Economics: “Endogenous Division Rules as a Family Constitution: Strategic Altruistic Transfer and Sibling Competition,” (with Yang-Ming Chang).  He also has another paper entitled “Choosing between Order-of-Entry Assumptions in Empirical Entry Models: Evidence from Competition between Burger King and McDonald’s Restaurant Outlets,” (with Philip Gayle) which is forthcoming in the Journal of Industrial Economics.
