Colgate’s 191st commencement to be webcast live Sunday

Mark H. Murphy ’77, president and CEO of the Green Bay Packers and former football captain and athletics director at Colgate, will deliver the keynote address at Colgate’s 191st commencement on Sunday.

Commencement begins at 10:30 a.m. in Sanford Field House. For those who can’t attend it will be webcast live through www.livestream.com/colgateuniversity.

Aveni coauthors paper detailing new Mayan calendar

A paper coauthored by Colgate professor Tony Aveni and published today in Science might put a damper on any plans by Hollywood to capitalize on theories about the world coming to an end in 2012.

The paper details the discovery and excavation of a home in Xultún, Guatemala, and a “wall painting accompanied by a numerical table and a series of long numbers that appear to have functioned like those found in astronomical tables in the codices discovered the earliest known Mayan calendar.”

In a discussion about the paper, Aveni explained that the new calendar offers no hint that the world’s end is imminent – this is just the beginning of another cycle.

“It’s like the odometer of a car, with the Maya calendar rolling over from the 120,000s to 130,000. The car gets a step closer to the junkyard as the numbers turn over; the Maya just start over,” he said.

Will this widely reported story stop the end-of-the-world conspiracies and any future Hollywood movies like 2012?

Raider is named finalist for top men’s lacrosse award

Colgate men’s lacrosse junior Peter Baum was announced today as one of the five men’s finalists for the 2012 Tewaaraton Award by the Tewaaraton Foundation.

Art students present: What Museums Collect

This semester, students played the roles of both art historians and curators in the Museums in Theory and Practice course taught by Judith Oliver, professor of art and art history and Medieval and Renaissance studies. The culmination of the class is What Museums Collect: From the Cabinet of Curiosities to Modern Curatorial Challenges, an exhibition that opens Thursday, May 10, in Colgate’s Picker Art Gallery.

Watch the video of flash mob on Academic Quad

You asked to see it, and here it is. In between classes last Tuesday some students performed in a flash mob as music poured from the Chapel speakers. It was right around 1:13 p.m. and it provided a fun break during the semester’s hectic final week of classes.

Raider is only collegiate player in world hockey tournament

After winning gold in the International Ice Hockey Federation Division IA World Championships last year, Thomas Larkin ’13 and Team Italy will lace up the skates in the 2012 World Championships in Finland and Sweden. Flash mob gives Quad a temporary new look

In between classes today some students performed in a flash mob as music poured from the Chapel speakers. It was a short break right around 1p.m. and a nice diversion on the Academic Quad.

Energetic children dashed around Huntington Gymnasium, eager to explore an inflatable obstacle course, join potato-sack races, and play basketball last Friday afternoon during the annual Sidekicks carnival. ‘Lost Boy of Sudan’ lecture fits with international theme

Colgate welcomed Gabriel Bol Deng, a “Lost Boy of Sudan,” to campus on Thursday. Gabriel fled Sudan when his village was attacked; years later he came to Syracuse, N.Y., as a refugee, and now he speaks about his experiences.

He came to Colgate to speak about his organization Hope for Ariang, which raises funds to build schools in Sudan. Gabriel was a very passionate speaker, and knowing the importance of a good education, Colgate students were very receptive to his cause. (more…)

“Leave your powers at the door” read a sign on the coatrack in Dionysus’s bar in the Masque and Triangle production of 3 Gods Walk Into a Bar. Directed by Jessica Hall ’14, and featuring an ensemble cast of new and veteran actors, the play was staged April 12 through 14 in Brehmer Theater.

East meets West in a stunning display of cultural fusion

Red spotlights hit the stage of the Palace Theater, illuminating Dao Anh Khanh’s silhouette behind an opaque sheet, on April 6. As the performance artist began to move, each of Khanh’s calculated motions was synchronized with alternating colored lights, powerful noise, musical harmonies, video, and smoke. Professor Benson adds to family values debate in Times

Janel Benson, assistant professor of sociology, has joined the debate about family values on The New York Times.

Benson, who specializes in sociology of the family, is one of the contributors to the Times‘ Room for Debate section of its website.
