On Thursday, May 26th, we took a guided tour of the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. This cathedral was built beginning as early as 1070 over the burial site of St. Olaf, one of Norway’s four saints.
On this tour we learned that this cathedral has both Romanesque and Gothic architecture as a result of restoration from fires. Parts of the cathedral were being restored as late as into the 1900’s and, although St. Olaf’s remains are no longer within the cathedral, it still remains a place to honor this saint. Although we could not take any pictures within the cathedral, we were able to see various alters and restored stainless glass images throughout the cathedral. The cathedral was both beautiful and interesting, and we were able to spend time in the cathedral to explore the cathedral after our tour had ended.
In addition, a fun fact that we learned on a guided walk through Trondheim is that the angel with wings on one of the towers of the cathedral was modeled after Bob Dylan’s face.
