As reported in spring 2015 edition of the Colgate Scene, Jarrett Turner ’04 founded a private equity firm, Soundcore Capital Partners, in April 2015. A deep connection to Colgate makes this new firm special. All three of Soundcore’s initial employees are linked to the university: Managing Partner Jarrett Turner is an alumnus from the Class of 2004, General Counsel Erik Emmett is the son of Steven Emmett ’70, and Associate John Gabler is from the Class of 2014.

Despite attending Colgate ten years apart, Turner and Gabler have shared experiences that they feel have prepared them to succeed in their new roles. They believe Colgate’s academics created a foundation for critical thinking, and they attribute some of the unique characteristics of Colgate to the successful creation and continued development of the firm.

Some of those distinctive approaches to education beyond the core curriculum are highlighted on the Distinctly Colgate webpage, which notes that, “a world-class liberal arts education and true-to-life experiences open doors to careers in any industry. Our highly engaged alumni also provide invaluable mentoring, internship, and networking opportunities.”

“One aspect of Colgate’s culture that I feel is evident at Soundcore is the focus on personal development and mentorship,” Gabler said. “At Colgate, I always felt like older students were open to helping me find the perfect class, get involved on campus, or overcome a hurdle. Similarly, Jarrett has recommended readings and resources, taken the time to work through problems with me, and at the same time been open to my suggestions.”

Soundcore’s emphasis on mentorship is clear, as Turner has quickly established an internship program that will be available to Colgate students for summer 2016. Soundcore is also set to host students this winter through Colgate’s Day in the Life job shadowing program, organized through career services. Lastly, Turner plans to present to the Finance Club next semester to discuss the private equity industry.

Soundcore Capital Partners is a lower middle market control-oriented private equity firm that partners with exceptional management teams and creates long-term value for their investors through a combination of operational improvements, internal growth initiatives, and strategic acquisitions. Soundcore’s first acquisition is Alloy Wheel Repair Specialists, a business-to-business mobile provider of wheel core repair and remanufacturing.

Overall, Soundcore is positioning itself to be a strong partner for lower middle market businesses and a tremendous resource for Colgate students and alumni.
