Welcome back! a note to SOAN students from the chair

By Chris Henke on January 20, 2014

Dear SOAN students,

Welcome back! I hope you had a great winter break and are ready to jump back into classes. If you are studying off-campus this semester, I wish you the best during your semester away from Colgate. I’m writing with some information and requests to help you make the most of SOAN opportunities and events in the Spring 2014 term. Please read on…

Keeping Up With SOAN News

SOAN implemented a few ways to keep up with SOAN news and events last semester that we will continue this term:

  1. Weekly SOAN e-mail updates — please don’t just hit DELETE! These updates are quick and have a lot of good information in them.
  2. The SOAN Blog: We want more student-generated content for the blog, so please consider submitting a post — we will give a $10 Bookstore gift card to the first 5 students who submit a SOAN-related post.
  3. The SOAN Opportunities Tumblr: This is where we post opportunities for all kinds of academic programs: fellowships, off-campus study, summer schools, graduate programs, etc. Please check it out and forward any opportunities to me for posting.

SOAN Faculty and Courses

This semester we are welcoming a new member of the SOAN faculty — Professor Michele Bigenho joins us after teaching anthropology for several years at Hampshire College in Amherst, MA. Professor Bigenho’s work focuses on the culture and politics of Latin America, especially Bolivia and the Andes region. She is also an accomplished violinist and plays with the Bolivian ensemble, Música de Maestros. This semester Professor Bigenho is teaching ANTH 102: Introduction to Anthropology and ANTH 365: Andean Lives. Please welcome Professor Bigenho to Colgate and consider taking one of her courses.

In December Professor Benson was granted tenure and promotion to Associate Professor. You might not know exactly what that means, so let me just sum it up by saying: it’s a pretty big deal. Gaining tenure is the key professional achievement for professors, so we are really happy and proud of her. I hope you will say CONGRATULATIONS to Professor Benson next time you see her.

Professors AveniHsu, and Shever are on leave this semester. Please consider sending a “Get Well” e-mail to Professor Hsu, as she broke her leg during the winter break and is recovering at home.

We do have some courses with openings as of beginning of the Add/Drop period, so I encourage you to speak with your SOAN faculty advisor or me if you are looking for a course to take this semester.

SOAN Events – Spring 2014

We are continuing to build SOAN community this semester with a line-up of events that I hope you will put on your calendar and attend.
