Grinchmas Party

By Lauren Marshall on November 9, 2018

Grow your heart three sizes and get in on all of the Grinch excitement with the ultimate Dr. Seuss Christmas classic that no holiday season is complete without!

On Saturday, December 15th at 10:30am, meet the Grinch and learn how he stole Christmas at the Colgate Bookstore. Crafts and cookies to follow story time. Free and open to children of all ages.

Can’t get enough of the Grinch? Catch a special screening of The Grinch at the Hamilton Movie Theater! Any child who attends the Grinchmas Party will receive a Grinch-y sticker. If you show your sticker at the Hamilton Movie Theater on Saturday, 12/15, you’ll get a free cup of popcorn!

The Grinch is only at the theater for one week (12/14 – 12/20), so mark your calendars now!

“Every Who down in Who-ville liked Christmas a lot . . . but the Grinch, who lived just north of Who-ville, did NOT!” Not since “’Twas the night before Christmas” has the beginning of a Christmas tale been so instantly recognizable. This heartwarming story about the effects of the Christmas spirit will grow even the coldest and smallest of hearts. Like mistletoe, candy canes, and caroling, the Grinch is a mainstay of the holidays, and his story is the perfect gift for young and old.

And don’t forget to celebrate Grinchmas this Christmas season, the annual holiday tradition inspired by How the Grinch Stole Christmas that encourages readers to grow their hearts three sizes by doing good deeds!

Holiday Open House & Tastings from The Fly Creek Cider Mill Cookbook with Brenda Michaels

By Lauren Marshall on November 9, 2018

The Colgate Bookstore hosts their annual Holiday Open House on December 7th from 8am – 6pm with store-wide sales. The entire store will be 13% off (some exclusions apply).

Brenda Michaels, author of The Fly Creek Cider Mill Cookbook, will be at the bookstore from 12pm – 4pm with delicious samples from her cookbook.

Fly Creek Cider Mill and Orchard is one of New York State’s oldest working cider mills. Owned by authors Brenda and Bill Michaels, the mill sits on the banks of Fly Creek near historic Cooperstown, where for more than 150 years visitors have come to watch as apples are pressed into fresh cider.

Released to commemorate the 160th anniversary of the mill, The Fly Creek Cider Mill Cookbook captures the history of this treasured operation through stories, photography, and more than 100 apple- and cider-based recipes.

These recipes range from sauces and drinks to breads and soups to starters and main courses. Each recipe has been selected with the home cook in mind. Contributed by mill employees and friends, each dish has been vetted by James Beard Award–winning cookbook author Judith Choate, who is a friend of the Michaels family.

When Hosea Williams opened the mill in the mid-1800s, settlers from around the region abandoned making labor-intensive, homemade cider in favor of milling their apples at Fly Creek. While waiting for the fruit to be turned into cider, community members amused themselves by watching the newfangled machinery, picnicking, and gossiping with friends and family—a scene not so different from the mill’s workings today.

More than 175,000 people visit the mill each year to experience a time-honored tradition that expresses the essence of another era. This book will appeal not only to home cooks in search of some nostalgic goodness but also to those who are interested in the history of a resilient American enterprise and the farm-to-table food movement.

Brenda Palmer Michaels is president and co-owner of the Fly Creek Cider Mill and Orchard. She attended the Rhode Island School of Design and holds a BFA with honors from Pratt Institute. She received the WISE (Women Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship) Award, among many others.

Colgate Day & Customer Appreciation Day

By Lauren Marshall on June 6, 2018

We’re combining Colgate Day with our annual Customer Appreciation Day and it’s gonna be epic! The entire store will be 13% off (in-store and online, some exclusions apply). Enjoy FREE ice cream (while supplies last).

Every Friday the 13th is a lucky day for Colgate University. But did you ever wonder just why Colgate Day is so special?

Well, in 1817, 13 men — six clergy and seven laymen — met in the frontier settlement of Hamilton with 13 dollars, 13 prayers, and 13 articles. During that meeting, the men founded the Baptist Education Society of the State of New York, the cornerstone for what would become known as Colgate University.

That’s not our only reason to celebrate the number 13. The university’s address is 13 Oak Drive. Our zip code is 13346. The first two numbers, standing alone, are the number 13, and the sum of the remaining three totals 13.

Even the university’s motto has a connection with 13. There are — no surprise here — 13 letters in “Deo ac Veritati,” a Latin phrase meaning “For God and For Truth.”

So this superstitious number has a very special meaning on our campus. And in honor of this tradition, every Friday the 13th is declared “Colgate Day.” We invite you to join us on July 13, 2018 as we celebrate the history of our great university. Enjoy special savings and deals all day long at the Colgate Bookstore!

The entire store will be 13% off (some exclusions apply). Sale includes S’well, Alex and Ani, and Patagonia.
