The Colgate Bookstore will hold a costume competition in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the publication of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone on Tuesday, June 26th, at 4:30pm. All you have to do is come to the bookstore dressed as your favorite Harry Potter character, magical creature, or theme from the Harry Potter books, and you might win a prize! Costume judging will begin at 4:45pm, with prizes for adults and children. So get your costumes ready, Harry Potter fans!

In honor of the anniversary Scholastic is releasing stunning new editions of all seven books, with newly designed cover illustrations by Caldecott Medalist Brian Selznick, as well as the beloved original interior decorations by Mary GrandPré. It’s the perfect gift to introduce a new reader to this beloved series, or a gorgeous addition to any fan’s bookshelf. When placed side by side, the seven covers become a long mural.

Join us at the Colgate Bookstore on Saturday, June 2nd from 11am – 12pm for the Utica Zoomobile: Rain Forest Animals! Meet rain forest reptiles, insects, and a Sumatran Chicken! Free and open to children of all ages.

Utica Zoo creates unique experiences and promotes public appreciation of wildlife through education, conservation and recreation. Located in Roscoe-Conkling Park, the zoo is part of a recreational complex made possible by the donation of land from Thomas R. Proctor in 1909.The first building, completed in 1920, is currently named the Wildlife Building and houses the administrative offices, auditorium, reptile exhibits and the zoo’ s kitchen.  In 1981, the Animal Care Center was added to the Wildlife Building for the quarantine and veterinary facilities. The first building made exclusively for animal use was completed in 1927 and still houses the primate collection. Other major exhibits include the Lion exhibit and the California sea lion exhibit (finished in 1986).

Join us at the Colgate Bookstore on Wednesday, June 27th at 6pm for a reading and presentation of “A Narrative of the Life of Mrs. Mary Jemison” by Joanne Shenandoah and Rebekah Presson Mosby. The presentation will include music by Joanne Shenandoah, followed by a question and answer session with light refreshments.

“A Narrative of the Life of Mrs. Mary Jemison” is the compelling story of a colonial girl who was captured by Shawnees in 1755 at the outset of the French and Indian War. Mary Jemison, aged 12 at the time, was adopted by two Seneca women and spent the rest of her long life (she lived to be 90) with the Iroquois. She married two Native men and had eight children with them. When she was 80 her story was taken down by James E. Seaver, a minister and amateur historian.

Jemison’s life was filled with adventure and tribulation. When captured, her parents and siblings were killed, a tragedy that haunted her all her life; nevertheless, she came to love her Seneca family. Years later, when offered chances to return to her former home, she chose to stay with her Native family. She lived during the French and Indian and Revolutionary Wars and had hair-raising stories to tell about war, as well as charming and even funny stories about peace time. She lived to see horrific war time brutality and to see three of her sons murdered, two of them by a brother; to be swindled by land speculators, a man posing as a long-lost white relation, and eventually to become a wealthy woman possessing thousands of acres of land in western New York State.

Jemison was named “Digewamis” by her Seneca family but was known as “The White Woman” by all. Hers is one of the great stories in American history.

Joanne Shenandoah, Wolf Clan Oneida, is a Grammy award-winning and internationally known composer and performer whose ancestor, Chief Shenandoah, would likely have known Mary Jemison. Joanne is a member of the Haudenosaunee (Six Nations Iroquois Confederacy). Shenandoah’s passionate reading conveys the power of Mary Jemison’s story. “Some of the scenes were hard to read,” says Shenandoah, “At the same time I learned a great deal about an era in our history which was both troubling and challenging”.

The book is on 3 CDs and produced and directed by Rebekah Presson Mosby, who provides an introduction. DougGeorge-Kanentiio (Mohawk) is technical advisor and James Wunderlich at Orbital Sound the audio producer.

Every Friday the 13th is a lucky day for Colgate University. But did you ever wonder just why Colgate Day is so special?

Well, in 1817, 13 men — six clergy and seven laymen — met in the frontier settlement of Hamilton with 13 dollars, 13 prayers, and 13 articles. During that meeting, the men founded the Baptist Education Society of the State of New York, the cornerstone for what would become known as Colgate University.

That’s not our only reason to celebrate the number 13. The university’s address is 13 Oak Drive. Our zip code is 13346. The first two numbers, standing alone, are the number 13, and the sum of the remaining three totals 13.

Even the university’s motto has a connection with 13. There are — no surprise here — 13 letters in “Deo ac Veritati,” a Latin phrase meaning “For God and For Truth.”

So this superstitious number has a very special meaning on our campus. And in honor of this tradition, every Friday the 13th is declared “Colgate Day.” We invite you to join us on April 13, 2018 as we celebrate the history of our great university. On Saturday, April 14th at 10:30am at the Colgate Bookstore, meet George Steele, an environmental educator and local author! Enjoy a special story time and learn how to expand your senses with a unique activity and craft by Rogers Environmental Education Center.

It’s night. It’s dark. It’s time to go indoors—or is it? The outdoors at night can be a scary place, but Wait Till It Gets Dark will help young readers investigate the mysterious nature of night. Years of teaching children in the outdoors has given the authors, renowned environmental educators Anita Sanchez and George Steele, firsthand experience in introducing students to the joys of nature at night. They have led kids on night walks in a variety of habitats, including urban settings. Based on these experiences, the book describes night-time landscapes and the nocturnal animals that inhabit them, from desert coyotes to the frog chorus in a backyard pond—and a corner of the bathroom at midnight where a spider lurks.

George Steele is an environmental educator working with schools, nature centers and museums throughout the Northeast. The former director of the New York State Dept. of Environmental Conservation’s Education Camp Program, he received the Conservation Educator Award from the NYS Conservation Council, and the NYS Outdoor Education Association’s Gold Award for Lifetime Achievement. He has a degree in Forest Biology from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

Whether you are a long-time fan of Dr. Seuss stories, or have yet to be introduced to his classic book, “The Lorax”, all are invited to ‘Seuss Saturday’ in Hamilton, NY on Saturday, March 3rd. Join us as we celebrate Seuss stories old and new.

Stop by the Hamilton Public Library each week to look for clues about where he’s been and write down your best guess. If you guess correctly, your name will be entered into a Friday drawing to win a Dr. Seuss book from the Colgate Bookstore! We have four books to give away and you can participate once every week to try to track that elusive Lorax as he makes his way around town!

The village of Hamilton Mayor, RuthAnn Loveless, will kick off the celebrations by making a public declaration establishing Seuss Saturday 2018! A special story time will follow the proclamation to celebrate Seuss and share his story of “The Lorax”.

Enjoy a free showing of the 2012 comedy “The Lorax” based on the Seuss classic, sponsored by Dr. Devan R. Berry, DDS. Don’t forget to order some Hop on Pop popcorn! Plus, celebrate Rogers Environmental Education Center’s 50th anniversary with special birthday treats! Friends from Rogers will present a brief talk on the importance of being kind to trees.

Enjoy a live-action storytelling of “The Lorax” in the Underground. Local children will act out the story as it is told aloud. Take photos in a Seussical photo booth, design kindness rocks, and enjoy the show!

Young fans of the popular Food Network TV series Chopped can test their budding culinary skills on Saturday, February 17th at the Colgate Bookstore. They will race against the clock to master the secret ingredients and win prizes! The fun begins at 10:30am in the 3rd floor events room, but contestants are asked to arrive at 10:15am.

6 teams of 3 will present their masterpieces to a panel of judges who will critique them according to creativity and presentation. Three of these teams will advance to the final challenge and the chance to win prizes!

This competition is open to children between the ages of 5 and 12. Children of all ages are invited to cheer on their favorite chef! Contestant slots are limited so please pre-register by emailing lcassulis@colgate.edu or texting 315-228-7480 with the name, age and contact info for the contestant. Those who pre-register will receive a special mystery gift! Depending on pre-registration, some spots may be available at the door on a first come, first serve basis.

Join us on Saturday, January 20th at 10:30am for Yoga Poses for Kids! Laurie Zbock, MS, LMT, RYT will lead a free class for kids of all ages as they explore yoga poses, stretching and breathing exercises. Crafts and snacks will be provided.

Afterwards, learn about the benefits of infant massage! Laurie specializes in parent education for infant massage, highlighting the importance of a secure environment and nurturing touch in the healthy growth, development and maturation of children.

Laurie Zbock has been in practice as a licensed massage therapist since 2004. She holds an Associates Degree in Massage Therapy from Morrisville State College where she also teaches full time as a massage therapy professor and serves as the department chair. She also earned both her bachelors and masters degrees from Utica College. The main focus of Laurie’s massage practice is therapeutic and rehabilitation massage. Laurie holds many specialty certifications including prenatal massage (including labor and delivery), infant massage and parent education, aromatherapy, eastern therapeutic massage, lomi-lomi Hawaiian prayer massage, cervical and shoulder soft tissue manipulation and many more.
