Colgate Competes in the Fed Challenge

By Department of Economics on November 6, 2014

Student economists competed in the College Fed Challenge at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York on October 31.  Using the knowledge gained in their ECON 353 class titled Fed Challenge, students discussed the state of the economy and made a monetary policy proposal.  The presentation was made in front of Federal Reserve staff who act as judges for the competition.

While Colgate did not advance in the competition, faculty adviser and ECON 353 Professor Rich Higgins noted that a great deal was learned in the class.  “I am very proud of the team,” Prof Higgins said.   “Students made great strides individually and as a group.  While we may have failed to advance, the team put together an excellent presentation.”

Now that the Midterm Elections Are Over, Check Out Why Democracy Matters

By Department of Economics on November 5, 2014

Jay Mandle, W. Bradford Wiley Professor of Economics at Colgate University, and Joan Mandle, Associate Professor of Sociology & Anthropology, Emerita at Colgate University, have recently published “Change Elections to Change America: Democracy Matters – Student Organizers in Action”. The book highlights the work that the professors have done with their son and Colgate alumni Adonal Foyle in founding Democracy Matters. Democracy Matters is “a non-partisan campus-based national student organization” that trains students to be grassroots organizers and activists and supports public financing of election campaigns and other pro-democracy reforms.
