Professor Ulla Grapard Retires after 30 years

By Department of Economics on June 15, 2015

After 30 years of dedicated service to the Economics Department and the Women’s Studies Department, Professor Ulla Grapard retired after the Spring 2015 semester. Ulla earned her Ph.D. from Cornell University and joined the economics department in 1985.  Her involvement with Women’s Studies began in 1987 and she is a founding member of the International Association for Feminist Economics, and has played a key role in shaping the interdisciplinary field of feminist economics. Her 1995 Feminist Economics article “Robinson Crusoe: The Quintessential Economic Man” became a classic in the literature, and has influenced many scholars. At Colgate, Ulla created a Gender in the Economy course that served as a model for other institutions. She received a joint appointment in Economics and Women’s Studies in 2004. Ulla served as Affirmative Action Director and as Director of WMST. Her teaching included leading the London Economics Study Group multiple times, and an extended study course on The Scandinavian Welfare State: A Gendered Perspective, that she led on 10 occasions. Ulla will be greatly missed in the department but we wish her all the best in her retirement!
