Colgate and Vassar astronomers collaborate on studying asteroid

An image of asteroid 2005 YU55 in the night skyColgate’s Professor Tom Balonek and his students utilized the resources at Foggy Bottom Observatory to capture images of asteroid 2005 YU55. Simultaneously, Professor Fred Chromey and his students recorded the same asteroid at the Class of 1951 Observatory at Vassar College. The images have been combined into a single composite image for study.

The collaboration was featured at spaceweather.com.


Physics text reaffirms Colgate’s innovative approach

Physics department faculty members Charlie Holbrow, Jim Lloyd ’54, Joe Amato,
Kiko Galvez, and Beth Parks have spent the last four years working together on a
revision of the Colgate-inspired Modern Introductory Physics.

The second edition of the textbook was released this semester after they passed a final summer poring over printer’s proofs. Read more


Summer research may lead to tool for homeowners

Inside a Ho Science Center physics lab, student-researcher Amanda Zranchev ’12 is taking on the role of inventor this summer as she conducts experiments on a plywood structure that resembles a closet on wheels.

“What we are doing in this lab will hopefully be valuable to homeowners one day,” said Beth Parks, associate professor of physics and astronomy.

Parks and Zranchev are developing an inexpensive handheld device homeowners could use to determine the quality of their homes’ insulation. Read more


H. Guyford Stever ’38 played key role in space program

Colgate alumnus H. Guyford Stever, 93, the top science adviser to two presidents who led the oversight committee that redesigned the space shuttle’s booster rockets after the Challenger disaster, has died.

News outlets from around the country, including The New York Times and Washington Post, reported on the April 9 death of Stever, who graduated from Colgate in 1938. Read more


Professor honored for faculty-student research

When professor Enrique “Kiko” Galvez delves into his scholarly work as a quantum physicist, it is not unusual for him to choose Colgate undergraduates — some still in their first year — as his research partners.

“They work alongside me on significant research projects, which is not always typical for students at schools the size of Colgate,” said Galvez. “My students’ research helps them significantly in their future careers.”
