By Gordon Brillon on January 11, 2016

I’m a Junior and an environmental studies major with a minor in economics. I hope to further my interests in natural capitalism and sustainable business practices via my major in order to influence future leaders to incorporate sustainability into their decision-making process. I’m an active member of Colgate’s community, participating in Hamilton Middle School Mentoring, the Colgate Rugby Football Club, Green Thumbs, and Student Senate.

While living a rural area of Central New York, I developed a strong connection to the outdoors and my surrounding environment. As I got older, this interest prompted me to make connections between my actions and their effect on the world around me, and subsequently resulted in a passion for sustainability. I’m am looking forward to how I can assist the Sustainability Office in achieving our Carbon Neutrality Goal of 2019 and enacting sustainable change at Colgate.

I am a junior majoring in Environmental Studies and Biology, and this is my first semester working as a Green Raider in the office of sustainability. On campus I am also involved in vegetarian club, Yes Means Yes, and was a cast member in This is Not a Play About Sex.

Being a green raider has meant that I can take theories and issues I learn in the classroom and apply them to situations on Colgate’s campus. I believe that climate change is the single greatest issue facing our generation, and learning to achieve goals of sustainability will be invaluable. After Colgate, I hope to pair my training in Environmental Studies and Biology working to protect the environment and maintain health of human populations in the process. I believe that human health is dependent on health of the environment, and that protecting our ecosystems in beneficial to us all.

I am a senior from New York City, majoring in Environmental Studies and Educational Studies. On campus, I am the leader of the Green Earth Gang club, a Senior Senator within the Student Government Association, member of the External Affairs Committee, as well as the University Property Committee. This is my third year as a Green Raider Intern for the Office of Sustainability. In this role, I have developed a sustainable walking map for the Colgate website, spearheaded the Campus Conservation Nationals competition on campus, and organized the Green Ambassadors program. I strongly believe in the value of environmental education to promote sustainable lifestyles and behaviors, especially in the lives of busy college students. Sustainability can be an engaging, powerful, and uniting force, allowing groups of individuals to come together and work towards a common goal. I am very excited to continue my work with the Green Raider program, and hope to continue developing educational programming and initiatives this year.
