Dining Services Update

By Contributing Writer on September 16, 2015

To the campus community,

During the spring semester of 2015 a student, faculty, and staff committee, aided by a consulting firm, conducted an extensive search process to select a dining service partner that would provide the best possible food service to the campus community. Chartwells was selected after a rigorous, competitive search, and in mid-July they assumed responsibility for the university’s dining services. Since that time, they have worked diligently towards a smooth transition. We acknowledge that the beginning of the semester brought many challenges, and that our high expectations have not been met.

The Chartwells team is working to fix the problems. Below is a partial list of the changes that have been made or will be made over the next several days. These changes were made based on feedback received from students, faculty, and staff.

The Coop

  • As promised a la carte items are now available
  • A grab-and-go cooler filled with salads, sandwiches, sushi, fruit, yogurt parfaits, and Greek yogurt has been added
  • Pre-made and made-to-order breakfast sandwiches, as well as full breakfast meals, are available
  • Additional items have been added to the salad bar as requested
    All-natural smoothies are now available
  • Chicken tenders and “Quesadilla Wednesdays” are back
  • Daily specials utilizing a 21-day menu rotation started this week
  • A sandwich bar featuring a daily hot special and two cold specials is now available

Frank

  • On September 21, a hand-tossed salad station will open, allowing students to select their own fresh ingredients and have staff create their salad
  • A second cash register has been added to help reduce waiting times
  • A Tandoori oven has been installed to introduce Indian cuisine
  • A rotisserie oven will be added over break, allowing all meats to be roasted on site
  • The 24/7 option has created a new social space for students to enjoy
  • Starbucks is serving hot and cold specialty drinks around the clock

Hieber Café

  • Additional food items will be introduced, including hot soups, Chobani yogurt, and additional varieties of sushi
  • Hours have been expanded: Monday – Thursday 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 a.m.; Friday 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.; Saturday11:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.; Sunday 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 a.m.

Catering

  • A new catering chef has been hired and new policies put into place to ensure a high-quality catering experience

In the coming weeks student focus groups and surveys will be done to continue to monitor satisfaction levels and to gather additional input. Chartwells wants your feedback, so please reach out to them. Their contact information is available below. I would also ask that you continue to provide your input to Joanne Borfitz , Associate Vice President for Community Affairs and Auxiliary Services, (jborfitz@colgate.edu, ext. 7120) or to me directly (bhutzley@colgate.edu, ext. 7766).

The Colgate community deserves an excellent on-campus dining service and we are committed to ensuring that this happens. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are sorry for any inconveniences encountered in these first weeks.
