By Contributing Writer on January 25, 2016

Dear Colleagues,

I hope some of you will consider nominating a faculty member for the Balmuth award, which are due next Monday. Please my earlier message see below.

Best wishes,
Constance Harsh

Dear Colleagues,

I write to solicit nominations for the Jerome Balmuth Award for Teaching and Student Engagement. This award, endowed by Mark Siegel ’73, is named for Jerry Balmuth, Harry Emerson Fosdick Professor of Philosophy and Religion, Emeritus.

The Balmuth Award celebrates superb teaching at Colgate. The recognition is accompanied by a significant cash prize, and the donor has provided support for an event honoring the awardee that coincides with the April meeting of the Colgate Board of Trustees.

The description of the Balmuth Award is as follows: “The prize will be awarded to a faculty member whose teaching is distinctively successful and transformative, recognizing that such distinction can be achieved through a broad spectrum of methodologies ranging from traditional to innovative, and that transformative teaching nearly always goes hand-in-hand with rich student-faculty engagement.” There have been six prior recipients: Marilyn Thie, Philosophy and Religion (2010); Adam Burnett, Geography (2011); Tony Aveni, Physics and Astronomy / Sociology and Anthropology (2012); Margaret Maurer, English (2013); Doug Johnson, Psychology (2014); and Karen Harpp, Geology (2015).

In your letter of nomination, please identify how the nominee’s teaching fits the description of the award. Letters should be sent by February 1 to Helen Payne (hpayne@colgate.edu). Thank you for your consideration.

Best wishes,

Constance Harsh

*Intergroup dialogue (IGD, sometimes called intergroup relations, or, IGR) is a method of inquiry that promotes active listening and constructive dialogue around difficult topics such as race, gender, sexuality, ability, and other important issues. Both facilitators and participants remain attentive to cognition and emotion, commonalities and differences, individual perspectives and systemic realities. Although some sustained intergroup dialog groups meet for anywhere from two days to fourteen weeks, the pedagogies it has inspired can be applied fruitfully to single-session discussions.

Student Recognition and Awards

By dherringshaw on January 11, 2016

The Dean of the College Division is seeking nominations for the awards listed below. All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to submit their nominations and letters of support at colgate.edu/awards. The deadline for nominations is Friday, February 12, 2016.

Please take some time to nominate those students who are worthy of distinction.

George W. Cobb Awards — A fund established by the late George W. Cobb, class of 1894, is used to recognize outstanding achievement by undergraduates (first-year, sophomores & juniors). Not less than ten nor more than twenty awards are made annually to those students who, during the college year immediately preceding the award, have demonstrated qualities of outstanding leadership and effective influence among their fellow students on campus, as well as among prospective students in developing interest in Colgate.

The Adam Clayton Powell Jr ’30 Award — Recognizes seniors who have made outstanding contributions to Colgate and in the process have enriched the campus community for students of color. Students will have contributed to the cultural life, the social life, the organizational life and have enriched the life of the student community of color.

The Class of 1997 Award — The Class of 1997 Award provides financial assistance to graduating seniors with preference given to a candidate pursuing a graduate level degree. The recipient will be both a leader and an intellectual and will have contributed to the many facets of the Colgate community or will have initiated a program or project that has greatly contributed to the well-being of the campus community. To be considered, this candidate must graduate in the top half of the class.

The Dean’s Community Service Award — This award is given to the most worthy senior who has given significant service to the local community. This service exemplifies an understanding that we are part of a larger community and that volunteer service and civic participation are part of the responsibility of well-educated women and men.

Your nominations are very important to the awards process. If you have questions or concerns, please contact Peter Tschirhart, Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Scholars Programs at 315-228-6532 or ptschirhart@colgate.edu.
