SOAN alumnus Carole McGranahan ’91, Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Colorado, is making the news thanks to a recent talk she gave at Yale University. You can watch her Yale talk below, and read an article from the Washington Post that summarizes her argument.

SOAN Faculty Celebrate the Life of Nelson Mandela

By Chris Henke on December 14, 2013

On Thursday, December 14, SOAN faculty participated in an event at the Colgate Chapel to commemorate the life of Nelson Mandela.  Professors Jonathan Hyslop and Mary Moran each had central roles in planning the event, and Professor Hyslop gave an opening address that movingly described the many ways to celebrate Mandela’s life and work.  Professor Moran read remarks sent in by Nigel Bolland, Charles A. Dana Professor of Sociology and Caribbean Studies, Emeritus.  In addition, Colgate President Jeffrey Herbst gave a keynote address and several students read excerpts from Mandela’s speeches.  If you missed it, you can watch the event on YouTube!

Anthropology majors present posters based on their senior seminar projects.

Four sociology and anthropology (SOAN) senior research seminars are wrapping up their projects this week, and each student is presenting on the results of their work. On Friday, December 6, SOAN majors in the anthropology emphasis presented posters on their research projects in Merrill House.  These students are enrolled in Professor Emilio Spadola’s seminar this term, “Senior Seminar in Anthropology,” where they researched topics ranging from the rise of K-Pop in Korea to the importance of “locality” in the museums of nearby Peterboro, NY.  A job well done to each of our SOAN seniors completing their capstone projects this term, and best wishes for the completion of your papers this week.

The following was written by Colgate student Alicia Gopi ’14.

I am Alicia Gopi, class of 2014, currently a joint sociology and anthropology major with a minor in writing and rhetoric. During the fall of 2012 I took a semester away from SOAN and studied abroad in London with the English Study Group.
