Hyslop to speak at Harvard conference on E.P. Thompson

By Department of Sociology and Anthropology on September 23, 2013

Professor Jonathan Hyslop will be presenting a paper at a conference on the legacy of the British social historian, theorist and political activist E.P. Thompson, to be held at Harvard University on 3 to 5 October. The conference, entitled “The Global E.P. Thompson”, is on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the publication of Thompson’s classic work, ‘The Making of the English Working Class’, and focuses on Thompson’s remarkable international impact. Hyslop will be speaking about the effect that Thompson’s work had in South Africa. His paper shows how Thompson’s ideas helped stimulate new kinds of research, scholar activism and public education initiatives in the context of the anti-apartheid struggle and the subsequent attempt to construct a new democracy. The conference is convened by Harvard’s Program on the Study of Capitalism and Weatherhead Initiative on Global History.
